Life Story

Caroline Amelia Masters was born on 10 June 1842 in the village of Tiffield, Northamptonshire, England. She was just three years old when her family emigrated to South Australia aboard the Templar, arriving at Port Adelaide on 24 November 1845.

Her father Charles Masters (1809–1866) was a farmer who established "Wroxton Grange" near Angaston, South Australia, and was a noted horse breeder. He died in 1866 of liver complications and was buried at Angaston Old Cemetery.

On 22 September 1874, Caroline married John Telfer at the Baptist Chapel, Tarlee. Together they raised six sons at Willow Plains, near Clare, where they lived for 47 years.

The Tragic Conclusion

In a remarkable and poignant end to a long marriage, Caroline died within hours of her husband John in August 1929. John passed away on 23 August 1929, and Caroline followed him the next day, 24 August 1929. The Register News-Pictorial (Adelaide) ran a photograph captioned:

"THE LATE MRS. JOHN TELFER, of Clare, who died within a few hours of her husband. Both were prominent Clare residents."

They are buried together at Clare Cemetery, South Australia.
